EFFECTS OF MASSAGE ON THE BODY SYSTEMS

SKELETAL
Massage has an indirect effect. Muscles will be improved therefore there will be less stress on the skeleton, particularly around the joints. Better muscle tone improves skeletal posture. Passive movements mobilise joints. By improving circulation, better nutrient delivery to bones enables more efficient cell regeneration.

MUSCULAR
Removes lactic acid,(waste product of too much exercise). Removes toxins and reduces stiffness. Improves circulation therefore there is a better delivery of nutrients and removal of waste products.
Physical manipulation of muscles helps flexibility. Massage results in improved muscle tone and posture. Massage relaxes muscles.

CIRCULATORY
Improves circulation by speeding up the flow of blood. Massage assists the action of the heart. It can lower high blood pressure by removing the tension that causes it. There is better delivery of nutrients and removal of waste products because blood flow is improved, also improving blood flow to the surface of the skin.

NERVOUS SYSTEM
Massage can either be invigorating or relaxing. A stimulating massage will awaken the nervous system, energising the body. A relaxing massage will calm the nervous system thus removing the effects of stress. Massage restores balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system.

DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
Massage results in better circulation therefore better delivery of nutrients to cells around the body. It improves the elimination of waste. Improves blood flow to the liver, hence there is better elimination of waste. Massage physically assists with peristalsis over the abdomen.

URINARY SYSTEM
Encourages more efficient waste removal therefore encourages urine production and elimination. It results in improved blood flow to the kidneys, improving their health and efficiency.

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Massage relaxes the body which results in deeper, fuller breathing. There is better and more efficient gaseous exchange and more oxygen is delivered into the body. The muscles involved with respiration will be less tense (intercostals and diaphragm) therefore breathing will be more efficient.

LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
Massage helps the physical movement of lymph through the lymphatic system. It helps with the removal of waste, thereby boosting the immune system.

ENDOCRINE
Massage results in less stress leading to fewer stress hormones. The feel good effect releases endorphins. The delivery of hormones is improved by better circulation.

SKIN
Massage invigorates the skin. It exfoliates, thus improving skin tone and elasticity, resulting in radiant skin.

REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
Improved circulation improves the efficiency of organs. Massage can affect the menstrual flow.

Enhance your life with Aromatherapy

From freshly brewed coffee to the salty tang of an ocean breeze; from a heady rose garden to a resinous wood fire, aromas can have incredibly powerful effects on our senses and well being. Whether we notice it or not, we are all influenced by the fragrances around us. But by far the most powerful, therapeutic scents of all are those from nature’s own pharmacy, essential oils.
Applied with a little skill and knowledge, essential oils can energise, soothe and de-stress, boost confidence and even drive away the blues.
Aromatherapy is probably the best known of all the natural therapies and millions of people have benefited from its sweet smelling powers.
However, its powerful effects should not be underestimated- it can be strong medicine and essential oils should be treated with respect.
Essential oils, which are extracted from flowers, fruits, roots, resin and leaves are some of the earliest recorded medicines. Pots of scented unguents were found in Tutankhamen’s tomb and everyone is familier with the frankincense and myrrh of the three wise men.
However aromatherapy as we know it today was born in France in the early part of the 20th century when a chemist, Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, burned himself and in panic, plunged his hand into a pot of the nearest liquid.
The jar just happened to be one of pure lavender oil and he was stunned to discover that the burn healed far more swiftly than he would have expected. Intrigued, he and other pioneers experimented with a range of oils and uncovered an entire fragrant pharmacy.
More than 300 essential oils are in use today. Unlike many complementary therapies, it is scientifically clear how aromatherapy works.
The oils directly affect the chemistry of the body.
An essential oil contains on average 100 chemical components and chemicals now known that they can have myriad functions. Some are antibacterial, anti-fungal, antiseptic, deodorising, or digestive, while others are antidepressant.
What’s clever is that they enter and are excreted by the body with great efficiency, leaving no toxins. Aromatherapists say that, for this reason, they are in many ways more sophisticated than most modern drugs.
Research into aromatherapy has also shown some benefits in a wide variety of conditions, including hypertension, infertility, arterioscierosis, PMS and dementia.
Skin conditions respond well and high and low blood pressure can even sometimes be regulated. Aromatherapy can help to strengthen the immune system and has been shown to be useful for easing muscular pains and rheumatism.
A study at the Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Trust, reported in the Journal of Advanced Nursing, found that patients in the Intensive Care Unit receiving lavender oil aromatherapy were less anxious and more positive.
Using aromatherapy for medical purposes should be left to the specialists, however, many oils are not suitable for use on people with high or low blood pressure or epilepsy. Others should not be used on pregnant women or those breast feeding.
Always treat essential oils with respect. Read the instructions and if you’re not sure of their effects don’t use them.
Although it is clear that essential oils work directly on the body’s physiology, they also have more subtle effects, Scent works powerfully on mood – olfactory nerves connect to the limbic system of the brain, which regulates sexual urges and emotional behaviour.
Scent also affects memory. In France there are psychoanalysts who use fragrance to bring out patients hidden memories.
Essential oils are also a vital part of any good beauty regime. Many have the power to rejuvenate, soften and brighten the skin and hair. No wonder so many beauty products include them.
You can make your own facial and body oils and adding essential oils to a bath is another way to enjoy aromatherapy. You can chose scents that will either energise or relax you; ward off colds or soothe aching muscles. Many people like to burn an essential oil around the house or office to bring about a particular mood. You can even put a few drops of oils on a tissue and sniff it from time to time- very useful if you need to keep awake while driving or alert for an important meeting.
Essential oils are easy to find and relatively inexpensive. With just a small array of basic oils you can treat a huge variety of ailments and moods.
Lavender, for example, is not only superb for burns, but also a natural antiseptic. It acts as an antidepressant if you’re feeling low and can soothe stress and insomnia. Not bad for something you probably thought was just a sweet smelling garden herb.
Peppermint is another good example. It’s a wonderful digestive tonic and also soothes tummy aches when massaged into the abdomen. But it’s also useful if you’ve had a shock (sniff a few drops on a tissue) plus, added to you’re bath, it will help energise you and make you think more clearly.
Harness the powers of aromatherapy for yourself today and notice the difference, It’s a sweet-scented tonic for the body, mind and soul.
